Snow on Sidewalks- Municipal Code

SMC 12.02.010 requires the adjoining property owner to be responsible for sidewalks including cracked, heaved, damaged or snow covered and they may be liable if a party becomes injured on that sidewalk. These provisions of the SMC are under the jurisdiction of the Street Department at 232-8800, however, the Street Department has indicated that they do not enforce the removal of snow from public sidewalks due to a number of factors including:

o       Snow may be placed on sidewalks by snow removal equipment in the street, the city does not wish to be punitive to property owners.

o       The City does not have the resources (financial or personnel) to clear sidewalks.

The City encourages citizens to communicate with property owners their needs for accessing the sidewalks. Notices have gone out the last two winters to all utility bill accounts providing this information about snow removal.

For those that need assistance with snow removal, a number of service agencies may be able to help. One such agency is Catholic Charities at 328-8400 which will help elderly and disabled with snow removal.
